Description

The Sagittarius is a summer constellation that is particularly rich of deep-sky objects. Two of the most iconic of the constellation and perhaps of the summer sky are the Lagoon Nebula and the Trifid Nebula, cataloged as M8 and M20 respectively by Charles Messier. The Lagoon nebula is an H-II region 4100 light years away from the Earth and it is extraordinarily bright that under a fairly dark sky it is clearly visible to the naked eye. It is a diffuse nebula rich in Bok globules and star formation phenomena. The Trifid nebula, on the other hand, is perhaps even more particular because it is made up of three different nebulae: one with emission (red), one with reflection (blue) and the central dark nebula which justifies its name.Located 5,200 light-years from Earth, it is also a relatively bright nebula. Finally in the photograph, having a very large field of view of 2.49° x 1.67°, it is possible to observe the open star cluster M21 near the trifid and the nebulous complex both dark and with emission that passes between Sagittarius and the Milky Way.
